D.R.T. is equipped
with a powerful file splitter capable of splitting extremely large (.1-10
GB files) into mutliple smaller files. The splitter is fast, and can even
apply filter criteria to files as they are split. The File Splitter can be
accessed from the File menu.
On average, to
split a 3.2 GB .com zone file to 25,000 domain chunks it takes approximately
18 minutes on a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 PC with 1 Gigabyte of RAM.
File splitting
is ideal for extracting information from extremely large files, such as zone
files.
For example,
let's say we are interested in splitting the .com zone file (3.2 GB uncompressed)
into 25,000 domain chunks of domains containing the keyword "monster"
in them. We would begin by loading "monster" and any other related
keywords into our Filter Settings window. Next, we would obtain the zone file
and add it into the File Splitter under "Split Filename" field.
Finally we would select an output folder, check the "Process with filter
ON" checkbox and press "Start Splitting".
Splitting is
extremely resource intensive so we recommend running no other applications
during the splitting process. As mentioned earlier, a 3.2 GB file can be split
in about 18 minutes.
The splitter
recognizes and removes nameservers and duplicate domain entries as are common
in zone files (due to name server variations).
Important:
The .com / .net zone files do not contain the TLD at the end of the domain.
The default format is:
domain NS Nameserver
domain NS Nameserver
The TLD must
be appended to the end to make the domain a valid domain. For .com zone files,
.com must be appended, for .net zone files, .net. This feature is automatically
turned on in the D.R.T. File Splitter.
